At Tibetan Treasures, the finest statues we sell are made by skilled artisans in Nepal using the lost wax method. This ancient method requires many steps and much fine craftsmanship to produce each individually cast statue.
First, the model is carved from wax. This model is a wax representation of the finished statue. Then, the wax model is coated with a refractory consisting of a clay mixed with rice bran, which is allowed to dry and harden in the sun. After three coats of this clay mixture has been applied, the model is placed over a charcoal fire to melt the wax (hence the name "lost wax" method).
Each mold made in this manner is used to produce a single statue. Molten metal is poured into each mold. When it has set, the entire mold is plunged into cold water to wash away the clay. Many, many hours are then spent in polishing and finishing--fine details are accentuated with tiny chisels, gold-plating is applied, hand painting is done, and precious stones are fitted. The result is a statue of very high quality, which has been individually cast, polished, and finished by hand. Tibetan Treasures is very pleased to be able to import statues of the highest quality.
