Counters are attached to the mala and come in pairs. After one round of the mala has been completed, this is considered to be 100 accumulations, and one counter bead is moved. When all ten counter beads on one strand have been moved, corresponding to 1,000 accumulations, one counter bead on the second strand is moved. Alternatively, a bum counter can be moved for accumulations of 1,000 (or 10,000 or 100,000). Bum in Tibetan literally means 100,000.
