The rice pot is used for keeping uncooked grains in the shrine. When Buddhism was first introduced into Tibet from India, many of rituals involved the scattering of flower-petals. Since flowers rarely grow in much of Tibet, the Tibetans adapted the rituals to use uncooked barley or rice grains instead of flower petals.
